Research Topic A stylistic analysis of metamodern poetry
Research Summary My thesis offers the first stylistic analysis of metamodern poetry in The YOLO Pages (Roggenbuck, Scott, and Younghans [eds.], 2014). It will be the first to consider the influence of the internet on contemporary poetic production and will establish a text-based model of how metamodern poetry works and how it has been influenced linguistically by contemporary culture, in addition to its cultural ancestry in surrealism, modernism, and postmodernism. The stylistic examination of the language of metamodernism will lead to a better definition and a fuller account of this poetry, its foundations and principles.
My analysis will provide a ground for metamodernism's positioning within contemporary culture; by uncovering its linguistic strategies, preoccupations, and motivations, we will gain a greater understanding of it as a contemporary, emergent poetic movement and uncover aspects of the contemporary, human, cultural condition as revealed within these poetic texts.
