Mastering the rules? Constructions of gender and political identities in the House of Lords.
My research is a sociolinguistic analysis of how speakers in the House of Lords construct their gender and political identities. Central to my study is consideration of how speakers seek to negotiate and 'master' institutional rules in order to establish themselves fully as members of the House. I examine sociolinguistic techniques used by speakers including politeness, humour and personal narratives to study similarities and differences between and within the speech of men and women. Communities of Practice and performativity frameworks are applied alongside consideration of wider political and social contexts.
