Biography
Dr Alexandra Carlin is a nurse educationalist and ethnographer with specialist interests in student-centred pedagogy. Alex obtained her BSc in Nursing (adult field) from the University of Nottingham in 2009. On qualifying she worked in Lincolnshire as a community nurse. Alex completed her MSc in Specialist Practice District Nursing from De Montfort University in 2018. In 2017, Alex was appointed as a Lecturer at the University of Lincoln and co-coordinated the Lincoln Interprofessional Higher Education Network (LIPHEN) to provide student opportunities for interprofessional education. She was appointed as an Assistant Professor at the University of Nottingham in 2022 and contributes to the teaching and learning on health professional programmes including pre-registeration nursing, post-registration physiotherapy and quality patient safety improvement modules.
Alex completed her PhD at the University of Lincoln in 2024 titled: "A focused ethnography exploring experiences and social interactions in problem-based learning in nurse education". She was supervised by Professor Ros Kane, Professor Emerita Jacquelyn Allen-Collinson and Dr Joss Winn. Her work has been presented at an international conference.
Expertise Summary
As a District Nurse, Alex has a specialist interest in community nursing and supporting people to live in their own homes. Consequently, her specialist interests include wound care management, health needs assessment, primary care, complex care (including end of life care), leadership and management.
Alex is a qualitative researcher and ethnographer with research expertise situated in healthcare education. She is an educationalist and views social worlds from a microsociological frame.
Alex also has experience designing and operationalising research in primary care with nurse led initiatives, particularly in rural localities. Alex continues to work clinically once a month at Nettleham Medical Practice.
