Biography

Dr Natalie Hodgson is an Assistant Professor in Law at the University of Nottingham School of Law. She is the Head of the Forced Migration Unit in the Human Rights Law Centre, and a member of the Criminal Justice Research Centre and the Nottingham International Law and Security Centre.

Natalie completed her Bachelor of Arts (Criminology) (Hons I) and Bachelor of Laws (Hons I) at UNSW Sydney, receiving the University Medal in Criminology. In 2017, she was awarded a Scientia scholarship to undertake her PhD in Law at UNSW. Natalie's doctoral thesis, 'Offshore Processing Torture: State Crime, Resistance and International Criminal Law' examined the legality of Australia's offshore detention of asylum seekers under international criminal law and the use of international criminal law to resist offshore detention. In 2021, Natalie was awarded the Andrea Durbach Prize for her article 'International criminal law and civil society resistance to offshore detention', published in the Australian Journal of Human Rights.

Natalie has previously worked as a legal trainee with the Refugee Advice and Casework Service, helping people seeking asylum in Australia's 'fast track' system.

Expertise Summary

Natalie's research explores harmful state policies and the use of law to challenge and resist the state. She has a particular interest in the policies adopted by states towards people seeking asylum, and the legal and expressive power of international criminal law to resist state crime.

More broadly, Natalie's research areas include international criminal law, criminal law, criminal procedure and evidence, and refugee law.

Teaching Summary

Natalie teaches Criminal Law, Advanced Criminal Evidence and Contemporary Issues in Criminal Justice. She is the teacher and convenor for the LLM Module, The Refugee in Domestic and International Law.

Natalie is able to supervise UG and PG dissertations in the following areas:
