Current Research

Ian is currently a doctoral researcher within the School of Politics and International Relations. His research looks at the portrayal of Russian opposition figures in the UK, US and French media. He will compare the opposition figures' profiles in the West with their significance and support levels within Russia and their profiles in the Russian media. He is interested in potential disparities between the differing portrayals and the impact these may have as the Putin presidency comes to an end. The topic grew out of Ian's MA dissertation on Alexei Navalny.

Past Research

Ian gained a MA in Contemporary History at the University of Nottingham in 2017/18. Ian's dissertation looked at the profile of Alexei Navalny in the UK press. Navalny is portrayed as a prominent Russian opposition leader whereas within Russia he attracts single figure popularity ratings. In addition, the UK press seemingly ignores the more populist and nationalist traits within Navalny's political background.

Ian obtained a BA in European Studies from the University of Hull in the 1980s.
