If you are ready to go your own way and experience life off campus with friends, a student house may be the choice for you. You will find that there are plenty of student houses near our campuses.

We understand that it can be daunting for students moving out for the first time, but once you know what to do, it can be a straightforward process.  However, this year there are a number of additional things to think about.

House hunting 2022

When to start looking

It's important to ensure that you're making the right decisions about your housing and accommodation for next year.   The University and Students' Union are advising students not to rush into signing up for accommodation, for a number of reasons:

  • Due to the pandemic, students may not have found it as easy to form the friendship groups that would naturally lead to housemate groups.  Give yourself more time to let these friendships develop.
  • Some restrictions are making it harder to view properties in person.  Even with virtual viewings you may not get the full picture about a property.
  • You will be legally liable for the contract once you've signed it, so if you change your mind and there's no break clause (they very rarely is) you will still be liable even if you change you mind.

Once you do start to think about where you want to live next year, make sure you are aware of the facts before you commit yourself to anything.

1. There is no shortage of accommodation in Nottingham, so there’s no need to rush!

If a landlord or letting agent tells you that you will miss out if you don't book early, ignore them, it simply isn't true.

2. Make sure your property is accredited

The Nottingham Standard helps tenants identify properties that meet a minimum quality standard and it recognises good landlords providing quality approved and well managed accommodation.

3. You can't back out of signed contracts

Once you have signed a contract you are legally committed for the duration of your tenancy. This is likely to equate to several thousand pounds of expenditure so it makes sense to be absolutely certain before you put pen to paper. Contracts are complicated documents and the Students' Union Student Advice Centre will be more than happy to check over your contract before you sign.

The Students' Union offers useful advice on their website along with the following guides:
