Frequently asked questions

Can I specify in my Will which part of the University I would like to benefit from my legacy?

Yes, we welcome donations to specific areas of the University’s work that interest you. Whether it’s scholarships for talented students or breakthroughs in MRI brain-imaging, we'll ensure that your donation makes a positive impact on the things you care about most.

What types of legacy are there?

We have summarised the different types of legacy in our suggested wording (PDF). We suggest you seek legal advice on which would be most appropriate for you.

Are there any tax benefits to leaving a legacy to The University of Nottingham?

Yes. As a result of the UK Charities Act 1993, the University of Nottingham is conferred charitable status. Although outside the jurisdiction of the Charity Commission, it is subject to the usual legal rules applicable to charities in English Law and to the general provisions of the Charities Acts.

If you leave a gift to the University in your Will, its value will be deducted from your estate (your money, possessions and property) before Inheritance Tax is worked out.

Furthermore, Inheritance Tax has been reduced from 40% to 36% for individuals who leave at least a tenth of their estate to charities such as the University of Nottingham.

For further information on the tax benefits of leaving a gift in a Will to a charity please see the HMRC website.

The University’s Exempt Charity reference is X15294. This should be included in all Will wording.

How will my legacy pledge be recognised?

If you plan to leave a gift in your Will to the University of Nottingham, we’ll invite you to become a Guiding Light. You’ll be listed as a Guiding Light on our donor roll of honour, receive invitations to events that have been specially curated for you and receive communications on how legacy giving is making a crucial difference at Nottingham. If you would prefer not to be listed as a Guiding Light we will of course respect your wishes.

I would like my legacy to be invested in perpetuity as an endowed gift.  How can I do that?

Making an endowment gift is one way of ensuring that your donation will make an impact on people's lives for many generations to come. Because your gift is invested, the capital of your gift will remain untouched, and the interest it generates will be used to continue your legacy indefinitely for the future.

Even today, a bequest made by W.H. Revis in 1924 continues to provide financial support to our postgraduate students. Your bequest can have the same lasting impact.

If you would like to discuss any specific legacy intentions relating to endowments, please contact Andrew Wright by calling +44 (0)115 95 13664 or emailing Legacyenquiries@nottingham.ac.uk

How can I make a gift in memory of a loved one?

Making a donation in memory of a loved one is a positive way of commemorating a life, while helping us to pioneer new medical breakthroughs, find sustainable solutions and nurture the talents of new generations of students.

To find out more about making a gift in memoriam please contact Andrew Wright by calling +44 (0)115 95 13664 or emailing Legacyenquiries@nottingham.ac.uk
