History of Engineering

Emeritus Professor and University of Nottingham alumnus, Stephen Brown (Civil Engineering, 1960) has written two documents about the history of the Faculty of Engineering.

The first is about the University of Nottingham Engineering Graduates Association (UNEGA). The second is a fifty-three year personal reflection detailing life in Engineering at Nottingham.

Professor Coates biography 


Professor R C Coates, father of Civil Engineering at Nottingham: a biographical note

Emeritus Professor Stephen Brown has also written a biographical note about Professor Rex Coates.

Professor Coates was the Head of Civil Engineering from 1958 to 1982. He rose to serve as President of the Institution of Civil Engineering in 1978-79.  He was known for his unique good humour, insistence on high standards and ability to lead by persuasion and get things done.

Professor Coates is fondly remembered by staff for his advice and leadership. Students will recall his excellent teaching of structural engineering and tremendous and amusing use of language.
