Research centres and institutes

Research centres play a central role in disseminating results to an international public, and coordinating research within the Department. Each holds regular seminars, with speakers including centre members and distinguished visitors, notably from Europe and the United States.

Centre for Late Antique and Byzantine Studies (CLABS)

The Centre for Late Antique and Byzantine Studies was established in 2007 with the aim of fostering interest in the Late Antique period in western Europe and the Byzantine Empire in the Balkans, north Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean, broadly during the period c. AD 300 to AD 900.

Centre for Spartan and Peloponnesian Studies (CSPS)

The Centre for Spartan and Peloponnesian Studies draws together the significant range of research and expertise on the region within the University of Nottingham. The region of Greece known as the Peloponnese has played an important role in the politics and economy of the Eastern Mediterranean from prehistory to the formation of the modern Greek nation.

Institute for Medieval Research (IMR)

The IMR brings together more than 60 staff and postgraduate masters and research students with diverse and wide-ranging interests in medieval history, literature, theology, philosophy, art and archaeology. We link Nottingham researchers with interests in medieval cultures, and foster collaboration with international scholars.

Underwater Archaeology Research Centre (UARC)

UARC was established at the University of Nottingham in 2004. The team offers a variety of services, with particular expertise in underwater operations involving environmental impact assessment and monitoring. A core strength of the unit is that it is continually informed and shaped by academic research, which keeps it at the leading edge of the field.
