Research Topic:
Corporate Ownership, Control and Social Responsibility Evidence from East Asia

Research Details:
This research is aimed at understanding how different corporate control patterns influence corporate social responsibility (CSR) performance in East Asian corporations. Instead of the impact of ownership, control right indicates a much clearer relationship between corporate strategy and reputation. Among family-controlled corporations, family reputation and financial performance better explain the devotion to social and environmental activities, while two other kinds of control patterns—governmental and institutional— enhance the social and environmental performance of such companies in general. The implications of this research demonstrate that the method of examining corporate control patterns will influence the result of how well firms perform in terms of CSR. From a practical perspective, corporate control can be considered as a factor in evaluating social and environmental performance of corporations.
