The N/LAB - harnessing technology for international development


Dr Gavin Smith from the Neo-demographic Laboratory for Analytics in Business (N/LAB) took part in Tech Week at the Department for International Development (DFID) on November 26.

Dr Smith demonstrated the N/LAB's work on automated road condition monitoring using earth observation imagery to inform transport planning and drive improved economic and social outcomes in Tanzania, Africa.

Held at DFID's Whitehall London office, the event promoted the role of technology in delivering effective and lasting solutions to international development and aid issues. Four innovation pilot projects funded by DIFD that use technology to bring about change were present.

The Right Honourable Penny Mordaunt, UK Secretary of State for International Development and Matthew Rycroft, UK Permanent Secretary of State for International Development both attended the event.
