Professor Helen Perks

Professor Perks is Professor of Marketing and joined Nottingham University in 2013. Prior to academia, she had ten years international marketing and consultancy experience with Olivetti (based in Italy), Acorn Computers (Cambridge), European Commission (Brussels) and PA Consultants (London). She was appointed to an academic position in 1991 with the University of Salford, where she was Director of the full-time MBA and part-time MSc in Marketing for a number of years. Helen has a PhD from Lancaster University. Helen joined Manchester Business School at the University of Manchester in February 2002 where she was Professor of Marketing and Product Innovation.

Prof. Perks is Associate Editor of Journal of Product Innovation Management (JPIM - the leading 4* rated innovation journal),on the editorial board of Industrial Marketing Management (IMM) and International Marketing Review. She regularly publishes in top management journals including JPIM, IMM, R&D Management, Journal of Business Research, International Small Business Journal, Services Industries Journal, the International Journal of Innovation Management, Creativity and Innovation Management, Journal of Services Marketing and has over 800 citations from such work. She was co-editor of a special issue of the International Marketing Review on global NPD and co-editor of a virtual issues of JPIM on co-creation.

She is a member of the EIASM International Product Development Management (IPDM) Conference Board and was conference Chair in June 2012 (hosted at MBS and attracting 250 delegates from 28 countries). She is currently or has been on the Boards and Scientific Committees of EIASM IPDM, Fellow of the Royal Society for Arts and Manufacture, Honorary Visiting Professor at Manchester University and on the academic committee of the Product Development and Management Association (PDMA)(www.pdma.org), based in the US. PDMA is the largest global professional institution for product development with over 3000 practitioner and academic members. She regularly presents, reviews papers and chairs sessions for the Product Development Management Association (PDMA) (USA), American Marketing Academy conference, IPDM conference, EMAC (European Marketing Academy Conference, IMP (Industrial Marketing and Purchasing) Group conference, and British Academy of Management conferences.

Prof. Perks undertakes external collaborative research with academic institutions throughout the world and with large organisations, such as the Corus Group, Jaguar/Land Rover, Astra Zeneca, Greater Manchester Police, as well as SMEs. She established the PDMA UK and Ireland (affiliated to the US) in 2000 and was president from 2000-2006, currently academic president. Its aim is to effectuate knowledge transfer between industry and academia. She has attracted EPSRC and KTP funding to support her work. Helen has operated as a member of the steering group of the British Academy of Management (BAM) Special Interest Group on Inter-organisational Relations, supported by EPSRC funding, and was track chair of the BAM conference 2002.

Prof Perks enjoys hosting academic and industry-based seminars, inviting major scholars and industry speakers in the field, and is invited to give keynote addresses, seminar papers and lead workshops in the areas of product and service innovation and inter-organizational relations throughout Europe and the US.

Research is focused on product innovation management. I have specific interests and publications in service innovation; inter-firm innovation collaboration and networks; role of design in innovation; platform-based strategies; user innovation; transformative and social innovation and longitudinal methodologies.
