Prior to joining ICCSR I was an Adjunct Professor at the Centre for Policy Research on Science and Technology (CPROST) and Beedie School of Business, Simon Fraser University in Canada. I received my PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Paulo, Brazil. My dissertation focused on the systems boundary of environmental Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), a 'cradle to grave' approach for understanding environmental impacts of products and services. I worked at the Pembina Institute for Appropriate Development, Calgary, Alberta, as a consultant on LCA studies for the local industry. I was later employed on various Social Sciences & Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) and Genome Canada projects at the Haskayne School of Business, University of Calgary and Simon Fraser University.

Research Interests
My research is primarily focused on understanding the complex interactions among social, environmental and economic factors, and specifically how they affect, and/or are affected by innovation dynamics, entrepreneurial behavior and policy development. A large part of my research concerns the difficult process of responding to technological and social change through innovation, which can be conceptualized as a panacea and paradox - a main driver of social improvement but also the cause of many problems faced by society.

My research areas include technological, commercial, organizational and social uncertainties of innovation, life cycle assessment, technical-economic cost modeling and sustainable development innovation. It involves the agriculture, chemical, energy, forestry, and tourism sectors, with field studies performed in Brazil, Bosnia, Canada, China, Italy, the Netherlands, the UK, and the US.
