I read Sociology and Social Policy at the University of Liverpool (1998), followed by Healthcare Policy and Management at the University of Birmingham (1999). After a pre-doc research post at Aston University, I completed my doctorate in Sociology at the University of Nottingham (2004) on 'The social construction and control of medical errors'.

I held a post-doctoral research post at the University of Manchester, after which I was appointed Lecturer in Medical Sociology & Health Policy (2005) and then Associate Professor in Public Management (2009) at the University of Nottingham. I was awarded by Personal Chair in Public Management (2011) and am now Professor in Organisational Sociology at Nottingham University Business School.

In 2013, I founded the Centre for Health Innovation, Leadership & Learning (CHILL), which leads the Business School's research on health systems improvement, and in the same year was awarded a Health Foundation Improvement Science Fellowship to undertake research on major system change.

I am currently Associate Dean for Research within the Business School, and also the Lead for the 'Implementing Evidence and Improvement' Theme for NIHR CLAHRC East Midlands, and the Lead for the 'Safer Care Systems and Transitions' Theme for the NIHR Greater Manchester Patient Safety Translational Research Centre.

Research Interests
Organisational sociology, medical sociology, sociology of the professions, public policy and management, risk and error management

Administrative Roles

Current Research Activities
Research Interests: My work is concerned with the changing organisation and governance of public services, especially health care services. A longstanding focus of my research has been to understand how new organisational and managerial innovations impact on the everyday practices, cultures and power dynamics of healthcare professionals, and how the institutionalised practices and power of professionals can stymie or stimulate change.

On a conceptual level, this has involved making connections between research in medical and organisational sociology, the sociology of professions and expert work, and public policy and management. Through my research I have been interested in applying and developing a number of social and political theory, especially Michel Foucault's concepts of governmentality and pastoral power.

My research is primarily qualitative and ethnographic in character, and I have examined a number of substantive policy and service agenda, including: * Patient Safety & Quality Improvement * New Organisational forms, especially Public-Private Partnerships * Lean Thinking & Service Redesign * Technological Innovation & Work Reconfiguration * Professional Education & Leadership Development * Major system change.

My work has been supported and funded by the ESRC, NIHR SDO, NIHR HS&DR, DoH PRP, PSRP and The Health Foundation. And I have published in leading social science journals such as Social Science and Medicine, Organization Studies, Public Administration Review, Public Management Review, Public Administration, Sociology of Health & Illness, Sociology, Sociological Review, and Academy of Management Journal.
I am currently supervising the following Research Students:

Charlotte Overton
David Pinnock
Emily Laura Gartshore
Lisa Marie Common
