Research Topic:
An Exploration of the Contextual and Interactional Factors in the "Nottingham Biopharma Cluster."

Research Details:
This research aims to investigate how an entrepreneurial ecosystem developed within a second-tier region. Firstly, the research contributes to the literature on regional ecosystems for entrepreneurship by explaining the development and current state of the local support mechanisms that interact in the "Nottingham Biopharma-Cluster" that allow local SMEs to engage with open innovation, social network formation and other entrepreneurial activities. It focuses on the context in which science parks operate as suggested by recent research (Autio et al., 2014; Lecluyse et al., 2019; Robertson et al., 2020) and is consistent with the "quintuple-helix" framework for high-tech innovation (Carayannis et al., 2018). Secondly, the research contributes to the literature on open innovation and social network analysis by combining constructs of both theories as suggested by Hidalgo (2008) and McAdam (2014) through cognitive proximity while it investigates of the perceptions that SMEs in the "Nottingham Biopharma Custer" have when liaising with external organisations such as collaboration partners (both within and outside the cluster), support organisations within the cluster, and national and local government offices aimed at supporting SMEs. This provides a qualitative approach that complements the quantitative assessment for collaborations in the biopharma industry provided by contemporary research (Schweizer and He, 2018).
