Revalidation Repercussions: Regulatory Reform within Maternity Services

This was a focused ethnographic study exploring the operationalisation of revalidation within a single NHS organisation, and its subsequent impact upon the behaviour of professional groups within maternity services.

Project aims

To observe the operationalisation of revalidation within an NHS organisation and develop theory about the way in which regulatory mechanisms, such as revalidation, were interpreted and utilised by professional groups within maternity services.

Project highlights

  • This study illustrates how formal regulatory mechanisms were shaped at local level by the informal processes of the research organisation.
  • This study illustrates how observations and experiences of revalidation in practice, as well as the content and context of professional work, contributed to mixed interpretations of, and reactions to revalidation implementation.
  • This study highlights how revalidation failed to adequately regulate individual professionals within the research organisation, symptomatic of the unorganised, ad hoc nature of the organisation and the mixed professional interpretations of, and reactions to revalidation.
  • This study highlights that despite mixed professional interpretations of, and reactions to revalidation, professionals appeared morally motivated to conform and lay claim to the normative values of professionalism. Professionals engaged with revalidation as part of an ongoing, professional maintenance project of professional status and survival; an ultimate acknowledgement that in order to maintain a licence to practise, engagement with such regulatory processes is a statutory requirement.
