CICCS team take part in Greenhouse Gases Technology Conference

CICCS team in Amsterdam

The CICCS team

The CICCS team gathered in Amsterdam for the 10th Greenhouse Gases Technology Conference in September of this year.

This biennial event, hosted by the city of Amsterdam, gathers expertise on the different aspects of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) from all over the world and at this year's event over 1,600 scientists from 55 countries discussed state of the art research and opportunities for implementing CCS. A staggering 700 posters were displayed in two sessions covering all aspects of CCS technologies.

The scientific programme was brilliantly mixed with an impressive series of social events spanning from a tour of the Amsterdam canals to a visit to the Rijksmuseum organized for the GHGT-10 delegates. The concluding conference dinner, introduced by a speech from the Mayor of Amsterdam, was hosted in the magical venue of Beurs van Berlage with a grand finale characterised by the presence of artists from the Circle du Soleil.

The centre was represented at GHGT-10 by CICCS director Professor Mercedes Maroto-Valer along with 6 delegates presenting 5 posters. One oral presentation was given by Dr. Mara Olivares-Marin who presented innovative methods for CO2 capture utilising carpet waste that captured the attention of the attending delegates.

The poster topics spanned from the effects of CO2 seepage in soil (Miss. Yang Wei) to CO2 sequestration in brine (Mr. Qi Liu), CO2 mineralisation (Mr. Xiaolong Wang), the experimental study of changes in porosity and permeability during in-situ mineralisation (Dr. Sarah Mackintosh) and finally the study of a natural analogue for leakages from sub-seabed CO2 storage sites (Dr. Giorgio Caramanna). Professor Maroto-Valer and the team successfully networked with other researchers and representatives of industries.

The event was a great success for the CICCS delegates, who were able to promote their current research and develop new and exciting collaborations.
