Analysing your skills

Student writing notes

When you are considering your career options and applying for jobs it is important for you to value the breadth of skills and experiences you have acquired during your PhD. This knowledge can help you to:

  • identify your strengths and interests
  • be in a better position to choose career areas which interest you
  • articulate your skills and experiences more effectively to a potential employer

You do need to take some time to analyse the activities you have undertaken in some detail and it can also be useful to keep a record of situations when you have used different skills.  Analysing and recording your skills as you progress through your PhD will help when when you are under pressure to complete and submit your thesis and are also applying for jobs.

For an example of a method you may adopt to analyse specific tasks read the Analysing your skills PDF format
