Careers workshops

Students in a lecture

Post doctoral researchers can attend a range of workshops offered by the Careers and Employability Service in as part of the Researcher Development Programme. Further details and booking arrangements are on Central Short Courses.

Workshops can also be delivered to researcher networks and groups within departments or schools by arrangement with Clare Jones, careers adviser for research staff / postgraduate research students.


Career Planning For Research Staff

This workshop offers the opportunity to develop and enhance approaches to career development. Participants will have the opportunity to:

  • identify the career issues and influences that affect early career researchers
  • examine the different approaches which can be taken to career management
  • consider a 21st century alternative which can be applied to academic or non-academic career routes

CV Workshop for Research Staff

The workshop covers the principles of CV presentation including:

  • effective writing skills
  • targeting a CV appropriately
  • how to translate experience and skills gained in academia to other employment sectors

Time is also given to cover letter practice, completing application forms as well as preparing other supporting documents, such as personal statements.



Effective interview skills

Developing researchers’ skills in preparing for, and participating in recruitment interviews. The approaches are generic and cover:

  • managing nerves
  • different interview and question types
  • answering difficult questions

The workshop will also offer an opportunity to practice in a “safe” training environment.


Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)

The workshop covers:

  • the theory of personality type
  • description of MBTI dimensions and types
  • feedback of the results of the MBTI questionnaire
  • discussion of use of MBTI to inform job-hunting styles and career development
