Summer internships: advice for existing applicants

The deadline for summer internships has now passed. The following advice is for existing applicants

  • These are full-time internships, typically working a 9–5 working day.
  • We encourage you to apply to no more than three internships. Read the job details carefully before making your selections based on your interests and skills, and the location of the business.
  • All applications must be submitted by midnight on Sunday 22 April 2018. We recommend submitting an early application, as we will not be in the office over the weekend to help with technical problems.
  • You will need to organise your own accommodation for the duration of the internship.

At Acres Engineering Ltd, we design, manufacture and assemble custom solutions to our customers. Job description:

We are looking for a SolidWorks CAD designer, with a background in mechanical engineering or relevant fields. 

The successful candidate will get the opportunity to use on live projects, using SolidWorks to design real products against industry design briefs. You will be part of an experienced team working in a fast-paced environment where you will be given the hands-on experience of design and engineering.

You will also visit some of our clients and solve their manufacturing challenges.

Coriel Ltd
Electronics engineer internship
 

Coriel was established in 2008 and has been based at University of Nottingham Innovation Park for the last seven years. We develop ‘Internet of Things’ sensors and identification solutions for a growing number of sectors.

Our customers include Network Rail, Alstom and others. We also offer a contract electronics design service so we work on a wide range of very current technologies, typically including mobile wireless, low power, cameras and displays.

The company is owned by three very experienced engineers (including at least one Chartered Engineer who can sign your IET application form when the time comes!) so we can offer a good opportunity to gain some real on-the-job experience.

Job description:

We have several ongoing projects which the intern might be asked to work on. Initially this would be alongside one of us but once up to speed we would expect close but independent working.

The tasks are likely to include electronics assembly and test, schematic design and PCB layout, investigating problems, background research, practical lab work and programming.

We will have a number of projects running over the summer so our intern will have the chance to get involved in some interesting real life work. We think they will enjoy the challenge and it will be of benefit in the future.

Prototype development intern
 

Fibre Technology Ltd (FTL) is a small to medium sized enterprise (SME) based in Pinxton, near Nottingham, that manufactures metallic fibres using novel melt spinning or rapid solidification technology. FTL formed in 1981 and technical innovation has always played a key role within the business. It is a part of the Dynamic Materials group of companies based in the UK and US, where innovation growth is at the forefront of the group’s strategic objectives.

FTL is the world leader in rapidly solidified fibres and 85% of its products are exported. The Shell Springboard programme recognised FTL in 2010 with an innovation award for their CoalMiser product that allows a 30% reduction in coal consumption. Sales for its successor, Firemizer are growing rapidly.

FTL developed its melt overflow technology specifically for the automotive industry and Microtex is a unique material for the muffler market.

Fiberstone Products Ltd (FSP) is a spin-out SME business based on the same site, that manufactures high temperature resistant composite parts for a range of industrial sectors and applications. FSP was established in 2007. It has built up an enviable reputation for creating novel solutions where ceramics break or steel burns away.

Job description:

As GeoSLAM continues to grow, we require a software and research engineer to get involved in developing the world’s leading Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) technology, which is changing the landscape of the mapping industry.

The candidate would be required to write papers and develop software programs to analyse the laser scanners data and SLAM technology. 

Main duties:

  • To develop software tools to analyse the simultaneous localization and mapping data
  • To develop source code usable in different environments
  • Example tasks: develop basic functionalities of the Robotic Operating System (ROS) on Windows operating system

Electronics engineer intern
 

Partner Electronics Ltd has been providing electronics and engineering support since it was formed in 2007 by a group of experienced engineers. Our aim is to provide an innovative resource to businesses and engineering teams that gets the best from the electronics in any product.

Our aim is to provide a more flexible and cost-effective option to engineering and project managers who need additional resource and skills to complete their projects.

From our experience of managing projects, we know that particular skills are required at varying levels during a project, and we are set up to provide those resources in a flexible way.

Partner Electronics has always been based in Silverstone in the heartland of England. Initially based in the Silverstone Innovation Centre before moving in 2010 to larger premises at New Rookery Farm just a mile or so down the road.

Partner Electronics is looking for an electronics engineer intern to join our team, which provides product design assistance and solutions for customers in a wide range of sectors including consumer electronics, telecoms and defence. 

Working as part of a hardware and software engineering team, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with, and learn from an experienced group of design engineers. 

We are looking for an enthusiastic and focussed engineer who fits well into our team and gets tasks finished. For the right candidate, there is potential for this role to develop into that of design engineer, as performance is demonstrated.

This role will be based at our Silverstone offices, close to Milton Keynes and Northampton with its fast train links into London, in a region with a long standing history of leading edge technology, from telecommunications to motor sport. From here we work with our clients throughout the country and beyond, to deliver technology solutions.

Job description:

The internship is anticipated to be based around a single or combination of projects.  The selected projects may be at a feasibility stage or any other stage in the project life cycle from implementation through to commissioning and final validation.  The kinds of tasks that are likely to be undertaken are listed below:

  • Process flow analysis: define and understand process flows for different products
  • Capacity planning: develop capacity plans to determine equipment and spatial requirements
  • Process design, equipment specification and factory design: analysis of key process design criteria in order to accurately specify equipment and factory layouts 
  • Project management tasks: specification, scope generation and management of  costs and program
  • Project engineering tasks: integration of equipment and facility drawings and specifications

In addition to the above, further tasks may be required dependent on the scope and outputs of the project required by the client.

Job description:

The intern will be working with senior engineers on a major new development to our IMU sensor. The objective is to cancel out common error sources and so greatly improve the performance of the sensor. Initially they will be working on a desk-based PC controlled test rig to see if the errors can be reduced, and then move on to road-based testing to validate the results. 

Skills/requirements:

Essential:

  • Confident and effective communicator
  • Good maths and PC skills
  • A predicted grade of at least a 2:1 

Desirable:

  • Full driving licence with access to a vehicle
  • PC programming skills would be advantageous

Internship outcomes:

The result should be a short study of the error sources in the current IMU sensor system, and a report on how these are reduced using the new correction method.

Job description:

The internship will be composed of two parts. The first part will be a project involving the development of a characterising setup for a novel fibre optic sensor. This project will be with the engineering team and you will have ample help to plan, design and develop the experimental setup. It will be useful to have a working understanding of waveform or function generators, oscilloscopes and LabVIEW but it is not essential.  

The second part will be a rotational placement with two other departments of the company (projects, production, sales, and finance). This part will enable you to gain exposure in different departments and give you the opportunity to understand the practical aspect of a possible career in these areas. During this time you will be expected to complete tasks and responsibility normally associated with a graduate-level position.

Skills/requirements:

It will also be useful for you to keep track of any new skills you may have gained during your internship or skills you have used and built upon during your internship. This will ultimately help you understand what transferable skills you have and how to better communicate them with potential employers.

Job description:

As part of an enthusiastic team, the role will assist with the design and specification of low-energy mechanical and electrical building services systems. The role holder will develop their knowledge and expertise of environmental design. 

Duties will include direct liaison with clients, design team members and suppliers to ensure correct coordination between design and actual installation. You will be primarily office-based, however you will be expected to undertake on-site installation duties as required.

Skills/requirements:

Successful applicants will be able to demonstrate key behaviours including planning and organising, commitment to learning and excellent customer service as set out in our practice competency framework. 

Design engineering experience is not essential as training will be provided, however applications are primarily open to candidates with experience of building services design or those with relevant qualifications.
