Engineering and Science Foundation Electives

International students studying on a foundation programme, either in the Department of Foundation Engineering and Physical Sciences (FEPS) or the School of Life Sciences (Science with Foundation Year), can take two 10-credit bearing modules. Those starting in September will take A (Semester 1) and B (Semester 2), while those starting in January will take C (Spring Term) and D (Summer Term).

English for Engineering and Science Foundation A or C

About the module

This module develops academic English and study skills in order to help you participate in your foundation year course, and then your undergraduate engineering and science studies.

We will look at what to include in the different sections of a lab report, and practise the language that is usually found in those sections. You will also plan, research and write a short report on an area of your choosing.

How you will be assessed

  • In class exam (60%)
  • 1,000 word written report (40%)

English for Engineering and Science Foundation B or D

About the module

This module develops and extends academic English and study skills in order to help you participate fully in your foundation year course, and then your undergraduate engineering and science studies.

We will look at how to plan and deliver an oral presentation and practise the language that is used in presentations. You will also plan, research and write a slightly longer report on an area of your choosing.

How you will be assessed

  • Presentation (40%)
  • 1,500 word written report (60%)
