My main teaching involvement is on the CELE Presessional courses, PEAPS 2-4.. My specific interests lie in teaching and assessing writing at all levels. I believe in the importance of a'top-down, bottom-up' approach in that students should be encouraged to read, observe and consider overall text structure and relevance, at the same time as working on sentence structure, grammatical accuracy in writing and appropriate vocabulary use. My MA dissertation focussed on the use of grammar in academic writing and the salient features of academic texts. Enabling students to understand the way academic grammar functions is essential both for the understanding and production of academic texts.
I am also interested in fostering independent and reflective learning in students who come from diverse academic backgrounds. International students often need time to become autonomous learners and CELE can help to accelerate the process by providing access to online learning, encouraging students to monitor their own progress and providing a forum for exchanging ideas and learning strategies.
Another aspect of my teaching role is also that of participating in the induction, training and support of new tutors both in their role as teachers and assessors.
