Hywel Williams is Professor of Dermato-Epidemiology and Director of the Centre of Evidence Based Dermatology (CEBD) at the University of Nottingham. The Centre includes the Cochrane Skin Group (conducting systematic reviews and identifying research gaps) and the UK Dermatology Clinical Trials Network (addressing those gaps through randomised controlled trials).

Hywel is a strong advocate of evidence-based practice, and works with healthcare users and within multidisciplinary teams to conduct high quality applied research that informs NHS practice. Hywel is founder and past director of the Nottingham Clinical Trials Unit, and now works as a national research commissioner, chairing the NIHR Health Technology Assessment Commissioning Board.

Hywel was part of the original 2004/5 University of Nottingham Veterinary Medicine and Science Project Board, where he first suggested and outlined the possibility of developing a Centre of Evidence-Based Veterinary Medicine, which was subsequently taken up the new School. Hywel has been impressed by the speed and practical way that the CEVM has developed over the last five years under Rachel Dean’s leadership, and he continues to have links with the Centre through guest talks and mentorship arrangements.
