Part II Examinations were sat at the end of the final year. Michael Futrell ran this final year course on The Soviet Novel, which, like the nineteenth-century literature options, demanded a tremendous amount of reading in Russian. The content of some of the Soviet literature courses sometimes drew criticism from visiting Soviet lecturers, who argued that there was too heavy a focus on those writers who expressed their independence from Soviet ideology, rather than on Socialist Realist classics.
