Emeritus Professor in American Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences
With great sadness, the Department of American & Canadian Studies announces that our much loved and esteemed colleague, Emeritus Professor Richard King, died on 19 April 2022 at the age of eighty. He had been suffering from a long-standing lung complaint which eventually took its toll.
Richard was a stellar intellectual historian best known for his books, The Party of Eros, A Southern Renaissance, Civil Rights and the Idea of Freedom, Race, Culture, and the Intellectuals, and Arendt and America. But he was also a wonderful talker and teacher, whose ability to make the most complex ideas comprehensible without being in any way reductive was hugely appreciated by both his students and colleagues. His gentle American Southern accent charmed all who met him. He leaves behind his wife, Charlotte Fallenius, and step-children, Tim and Christopher Rundle. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends. He will be greatly missed.
