My MRes will be the first to document the short and continuing history of Grime music and its wider culture in relation to the use of physical and geographical spaces in London. I will look at how these uses (in places such as schools, youth clubs, radio stations, recording studios, clubs and the streets) changed over a period of 20 years in response to various sociological and political factors. I will focus closely on the themes of soundsystem culture, London street culture and access to allow the reader to walk the spaces of Grime. Due in part to a paucity of written source material on this topic, the project's methodologies will include first-hand interviews and ethnographic studies of the music itself. It will also be necessary to incorporate audio-visual elements, such as photography, video recordings, music and digital maps to build as complete a tour of Grime's spaces as can be taken.
