Research Topic

Fan Communities and Cultural Hierarchy: Sherlock Holmes

Research Summary

My thesis will challenge existing research about fan communities and fan-produced transformative works on the basis of the fandom surrounding Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. It will look at different groups of Holmes aficionados and examine the cultural hierarchies and tensions that exist within the fandom, as well as examining more closely a fandom that sits at the crossroads between literary societies and classical media fandom. It will look at issues arising from the definition of the terms "fan" and "fandom". The thesis will also look at the works produced by "fans": contrasting and examining both commercially published pastiches ("profic") and non-profit productions of fanfiction.
