Research Topic

Contested Genre: Conflicting Genre Discourses on American Fantasy Television

Research Summary

My research examines fantasy television as a contested genre, analysing the often conflicting discourses generated about fantasy's definition and generic status by different stakeholders. The project focuses on channels, television writers, and Over-the-Top streaming services as genre stakeholders in the United States post-2000, and examines how the contestation created by stakeholder disagreements shapes our understanding of genre.
