Research Topic

Afrofuturism & Defining Race, 1960s-Present Day

Research Summary

My PhD will examine the relationship between the theory of race and Afrofuturism from the 1960s until the present day. Afrofuturists criticise the concept of race as a social construct that has become a limitation, but racial identity continues to be an important part of Afrofuturist works. My project will also look at how or whether race continues to exist in the 'futures' envisioned by various authors and artists. I will be using music and literature including graphic novels, from the 1960s until the present day, with a focus on Octavia E. Butler, Janelle Monae, and Milestone Media (DC) comics.
