Biography

I work on education, especially radical education and access for marginalised groups, with an emphasis on Cuba, drawing on my own experience of working in secondary and further education in the UK.

Teaching Summary

I'm currently co-convening a final year module on Cuban culture and education. Previously, I've worked on modules on US-Cuban relations and radicalism in Latin America since the Cuban Revolution.

I've also worked in FE and schools on vocational programmes, such as Entry to Employment; adult basic literacy and numeracy; 1-2-1 and small group literacy interventions; and English as an Additional language with children and adults.

Current Research

I am currently working on a three year Leverhulme funded research project to assess the personal and community impact of the municipalisation of Cuban higher education that occurred in the first decade of the 21st century.

I'm also engaged in setting up a research project looking at the importance of learning support in UK schools and the impact of recent cuts on services.

As part of both of these projects, I'm attempting to develop methodologies that amplify the voices and recognise the expertise of research participants.

Past Research

My PhD thesis, published as a monograph by Palgrave Macmillan in July 2016, investigated the methods used in Cuban education to develop and engage young people ideologically and in terms of their citizen behaviours. It included in-depth studies of school textbooks for civic education and Cuban history, along with an analysis of the emergente programmes, which sought to re-engage many thousands of young people by training them as teachers, social workers, art instructors, etc.
