Third Sector Consultancy

This project involves teams of student volunteers from the Faculty of Social Sciences working together over a four or five week period on projects put forward by local third sector organisations. The issues the teams have looked at in the past include identifying new target markets for fundraising, researching the experiences of users of health services and identifying the existing provision of services for men experiencing mental health issues.

Each group undertakes the work in close collaboration with the organisation, checking they are on course to meet the brief. At the end of the four/five weeks, the students present back their findings to their organisations and to an invited audience of University staff. The groups also present the organisations with written reports of their work.

The students gain real-life experience of working with a client and in a team, which they report as being invaluable when applying for jobs. The organisations involved have been impressed by how much can be achieved in such a short period of time.

It was an opportunity to undertake that research that you always want to do as an organisation but don’t always have the resources to step back and undertake it as day to day tasks take over.

It gave us some research skills and capacity which we don’t have. It also gave us informed pairs of eyes to take our ideas forward
