Literary culture is not just about books: it is also structured around places and specific moments in time that are linked to texts and authors. We remember authors and their works via the spaces with which they are linked (writers’ houses, graves and monuments, places associated with particular works), and via commemorative events (centenary celebrations, for instance).
This workshop aims to bring together scholars and representatives of museums and literary heritage organisations, to discuss practices of literary commemoration, both past and present. Through three case-studies, each looking at the ways in which a writer is commemorated in a particular place (DH Lawrence in Nottingham; Rimbaud in Charleville-Mézières and London; Lorca in Granada), the workshop will investigate the following key issues:
