Prof. Nan LI
13:00-14:30, Lecture Theatre A30, Lakeside Arts
Free, registration required* Speaker: Dr Li Nan, NCI China Director; Professor of Chinese Literature, Fudan University Abstract: Chinese Confucian culture has existed as a mainstream culture for over 2,000 years. But during the late Qing Dynasty, China embarked on a path of modernisation that challenged many accepted tenets of Confucianism. The May 4th Movement, where modern intellectuals led by LU Xun in 1919 embraced Western ideas, starkly encapsulated this drive for change. The speaker will examine this period and look into how Chinese traditional culture is being modernised now in the era of "globalisation".
