NCI was proud to co-organise “Routes into China: market potential and opportunities for SMEs” in partnership with both the Language for Business project based at Nottingham’s School of Cultures, Languages and Area Studies and Asia Business Center. The joint event aimed to provide insight for businesses looking to enter the Chinese market and highlight potential opportunities for SMEs in the East Midlands region. It took place at Nottingham Contemporary on Monday 2 July and attracted over 100 participants from local SMEs.

During the event, NCI UK Director Jason Feehily, who is also Director of Knowledge Exchange-Asia at the University of Nottingham (UoN), gave a keynote speech on “Chinese Market Potential and Opportunities for SMEs”. Other highlights included a workshop titled “I Chat, You Chat, WeChat: Social eCommerce on China’s 1 Billion User Platform” by Adam Knight of Tong Digital, who offered practical advice on setting up, managing and promoting a store on WeChat; a panel discussion, “Identifying Market Opportunities” led by Min Rose of UoN’s Asia Business Centre, with Dr Neil Hughes, Director of Modern Language Teaching of the UoN, Tim Shaw from the Department of International Trade and Midlands Engine, David Gregory from the China-Britain Business Council (CBBC) and Adam Knight; “From Business Card to Getting Paid – Building Effective Business Partnerships with China”, a workshop by Min Rose; a “Chinese Business Language Taster Session” by NCI Deputy Manager Ms Aiyu Wu; a workshop on “The Nottingham-Ningbo Initiative: Can it Help my Business and How?” by Rob Avery Philpp, Investment Strategic Programme Manager at Midlands Engine Trade and; “What’s it Really Like? An SME Case Study” presented by Kayleigh Renberg-Fawcett, Director of the China-Britain Football Centre.

By bringing relevant support networks and organisations together, the event successfully created a platform for local SMEs to find out how to access the expertise and resources the University, the city and government can provide. Examples of such support include student placement, language learning opportunities, market intelligence and mentoring.

Feedback from the event participants was very positive. Most of the attendees found it highly informative. By the end of the event, several companies expressed interest in joining the UNNC Incubator; a number of companies said that they would consider joining a trade mission to China; three local businesses signed up to NCI’s free Business Mandarin lessons.

“Routes into China is a relatively new way of showcasing the importance of language and culture in developing economic relations between the UK and China. It is also a way to showcase the extraordinary talent in NCI.” said Jason Feehily, adding “In April, with the Vice-Chancellor, we presented this approach to Hanban as a way for NCI to distinguish itself as a Model Institute. Today is an example of the way this approach will be successful.”
