The University of Nottingham has a campus in Ningbo, China that is keen to build up its economics PhD programme. Ningbo is a large, prosperous city near Shanghai and has a population around the size of London. The University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) was the first foreign joint venture university to be created in China and all teaching there is done in English. The School of Economics at UNNC has a highly successful undergraduate programme with 87% of students continuing into postgraduate education and 71% in world top 100 universities including Chicago, Oxford and LSE.
Typically, economics PhD students at UNNC will be expected to spend their first year in the UK Nottingham campus taking the taught PhD modules and then conduct their research at Ningbo in subsequent years. They will be assigned both a UK supervisor and a Ningbo based supervision team.
This year, there will be 10 UNNC scholarships assigned to the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences that economics PhD applicants will be eligible to compete for, with a deadline for applications in January 2018. Alternatively, UNNC offers fee waivers for students able to bring funding from industry to cover their living costs (an estimated 177,000 RMB over three years) by creating an industrial scholarship in the name of the company supporting the student.
Although the Ningbo campus is part of the University of Nottingham and PhD students are both awarded a UK recognised degree, for administrative reasons, students must make a separate application for entry to the PhD programme at UNNC.
