Remembering Alan Bell

Alan Bell, Reader in the Shell Centre for Mathematical Education from 1967 until his retirement in 1989, died on 5 April 2018 aged 88. He had an international reputation in the field, particularly for his fundamental work through the 1980s on formative assessment, which he called 'diagnostic teaching'. He remained academically active after retirement, being a real presence at the Shell Centre Jubilee Conference in 2017. His interest in music was such that he sang in two choirs until three weeks before he died.

Long-term colleague and friend, Professor Hugh Burkhardt remembers Alan and his work in an obituary (PDF).
