Commonwealth Shared Scholarship - MA Education Student

Mary Abetang is from Nigeria and studied the MA Education as a Commonwealth Scholar.

Mary graduated as a teacher in 2014 and worked in different roles where she was able to identify problems that teachers and students were facing in school. This led to her establishing a foundation to provide scholarships to less privileged children to help with the financial costs of education. She worked as a volunteer with a non-governmental organisation providing access to education to children from slum areas, and also participated in the Young African Leadership Initiative which invests in the next generation of African leaders. Whilst Mary wants to dedicate herself to these causes, she identified that she had inadequate leadership skills and professional development and applied for a Commonwealth Scholarship to study the MA Education at the University of Nottingham.

Mary has shared her experiences before coming to Nottingham, studying at the University and explains how being a Commonwealth Scholar has benefitted her, in a post on the International Students' Blog.

Applications are currently open for Commonwealth Shared Scholarships for 2020, the closing date is 18 December 2019 at 4pm UK time. Visit the website for more information.
