Assistant Professor of Education, Faculty of Social Sciences
Holly Henderson joined Nottingham as an Assistant Professor in Education in 2019. She previously held positions at the University of Birmingham, following the completion of her ESRC-funded doctorate, and she began her career teaching in the Further Education sector. Her research and teaching focus broadly on sociological issues of inequality in education. In particular, she is interested in access to and experiences of post-compulsory and higher education. Her research is theoretically informed by social geographies, which enable analysis of the ways in which place, space and mobilities structure educational possibility. She is also interested in narrative and its relationship to subjectivity.
Holly teaches on the BA Education and the MA Education programmes in the School of Education.
Holly is interested in supervising postgraduates in the following areas:
Access to and within higher education
Further, vocational and post-compulsory education
Remote and rural higher education
Equality and diversity in higher education

Holly is currently the Principal Investigator on a project funded by the Society of Research into Higher Education. The project is entitled: 'Local higher education in a global marketplace: Everyday mobility and local capital in island higher education', and explores the experiences of students studying degree courses on island locations in the UK. The project brings together sociological and geographical theorisations of student subjectivities, and looks at the ways in which relationships to place impact upon educational experience and opportunity. She is also working on a monograph based on her doctoral project, entitled entitled Higher Education outside of the university: Local students and inequalities of place, space and mobility (Routledge, forthcoming) (Routledge, forthcoming). She has published journal articles in The Journal of Further and Higher Education, Gender and Education and International Journal of Qualtative Studies in Education, and was lead editor on the edited collection, Possible Selves and Higher Education: New Interdisciplinary Insights (Routledge, 2018).
