Rebecca Hughes has a longstanding interest in international education and English language developed over a twenty-five year career in Applied Linguistics and policy for internationalization of Higher Education. As an Applied Linguistics researcher she established a particular profile as an academic working on spoken language through her articles and books on spoken versus written language.
Rebecca worked for the University of Nottingham for 18 years and during that time was Lecturer/Senior Lecturer then Professor (2007) in Applied Linguistics and was the Director of the Centre for English Language Education (CELE) from 2000 to 2010.
During her time with Nottingham University she was closely involved in the setting up of the English Language and EAP provision at the two international campuses, including infrastructure, quality assurance, staffing, the design of Foundation/Pre-degree programmes, In-sessional support, and the BA in English Language and Applied Linguistics. She was Chair of the Collaborative Courses committee and Vice-Dean (Arts) for a number of years.
Rebecca was appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor (International) at the University of Sheffield in 2010 where she led the creation of a successful new internationalization strategy for the University as their first PVC International. The legacy of this can be seen in the award winning 'We are International' campaign, and strengthened links at all levels with leading institutions worldwide, including the University of Tokyo bilateral summer school programmes.
In 2013 Rebecca joined the British Council as their Director of International Higher Education and in June 2014 was appointed Director of Education -- a role that covered the work of the British Council in Schools, Skills, Science for Society and Higher Education.
In 2014 Rebecca was delighted to be invited to rejoin the academic community of the University of Nottingham as Honorary Professor of Applied Linguistics and International Education (SMLC, Malysia Campus) a role which was renewed in 2017. In that year, Rebecca was also appointed Chief Officer, Learning and Teaching for the International Baccalaureate Organisation with a remit to further develop their programmes at all levels, based on leading research and insight from schools, their communities, universities and employers.
