Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages Alumni Profile

Jie Painter - TCSOL studentJie Painter

Year of graduation: 2019

I studied part-time between 2017-2019. Before I moved to the UK, I was a qualified teacher in Early Years education in China, the country where I was born. I am now a part-time language tutor in a local secondary school, and I am also working for an exam board as a setter and an examiner of Mandarin Chinese IGCSE.

During this course, I found the group discussions interesting in lectures and I also enjoyed the group learning as homework. These were not only about sharing my thoughts and ideas, but also involved learning from each other. Both of the above also helped with the preparation for my assignments and dissertation.

Some of the workshops were also interesting to me. The workshops by invited speakers created great opportunities for me to explore other teaching methods. I have also added parts from this experience into one of my assignments as a fresh idea.

The annual student conference at the end of the course gathered the students together and involved sharing our teaching and learning experiences. This was a great way to celebrate the students' achievements. It also provided the opportunity to develop useful skills and gain more confidence to give academic presentations.
I would like to thank the School of Education for giving me the opportunity to study at the University of Nottingham, the city which has now become my second hometown.
