tbcWhy am I having problems logging into Second Life

Tutorial overview

This tutorial explains some problems that can occur when attempting to log in to Second Life.

Why can't I log in to Second Life?

Is it your first time attempting to login?

If yes, have you registered at the Second Life website, received an e-mail to confirm registration and followed the link in the e-mail to activate your account?

You will not be able to use Second Life until your account has been activated.

Do you see an error message when log in fails?

See error messages below for more information:

'Your user name and/or password is incorrect.'

Is your user name entered correctly with your SL first name in the first box and your last name in the second box?

Is your password entered correctly in the password box? Remember, your password is case sensitive.

Visit the Second Life website to recover your name / password if you have forgotten it.

'The system is logging you out right now. Your account will not be available until (date/time).'

Close SL, wait fifteen minutes and attempt to log in again. Do not repeatedly try to log in as this may take longer for your account to become available again.

If you are still unable to log in, contact Second Life directly by submitting a ticket via their website.

'Despite our best efforts, something unexpected has gone wrong.'

This message often appears when SL is down and may only prevent you logging in for a few minutes.

Check Second Life status reports for any current issues affecting people logging into SL.

Other things to consider when unable to login:

  1. Do you have a stable internet connection?
  2. Are your SL name and password entered correctly?
  3. Check Second Life status reports for any current issues affecting people logging into SL.
  4. Change your login location as it may be the location you are trying to enter that is having problems (see below).
  5. Try uninstalling SL (incl. temporary cache files) and reinstalling it from the download page of the Second Life website.

Follow these steps to change your login location:

Select Edit > Preferences from the login screen and select the General tab.

Check the Show Start Location on Login Screen box and click OK.

A Start Location drop down box will appear below the login boxes.

Try selecting My Home from the box or typing in the name of a specific region (e.g. Ahern, a popular help island) and try logging in again.
