Amrutha Kishor

Course studied: Architecture Design MArch

"I met some fantastic mentors at the university. With their encouragement, I was inspired to focus on the importance of sustainability in design. I was nominated for the RIBA Presidents Award for my research project based on energy consumption in new buildings.

It sparked a fire in me to work in an area of architecture that makes a difference to people’s lives. I now run my own firm, Elemental, which deals with climate responsive architectural design to suit the climate of a specific location."

Nicholas Mutiso

Course studied: Environmental Engineering MSc

I grew up in Kenya, a poor developing country yet highly vulnerable and suffering from the effects of climate change. I wanted to advance my career with comprehensive skills and knowledge of the global energy sector. I applied and won a full Chevening and University of Nottingham Scholarship award and went on to graduate with an MSc in Environmental Engineering.

Coming from a civil engineering background, aspects of the course were challenging but the university enriched my engineering knowledge with climate change solutions. I was also able to collaborate with other engineers to design multidisciplinary projects that placed environment and sustainability at the core of each decision. My time at Nottingham, introduced me to a global community. I gained valuable skills and learned to appreciate, respect and accommodate people from varied cultures, religions and lifestyles.

I now work as an environmental technical specialist for the United Nations Environment Programme. I support developing countries to design, implement and monitor   environmental projects.

Course studied: Additive Manufacturing and 3D Printing MSc

"As an undergraduate student I was always fascinated with the amazing possibilities presented by Additive Manufacturing and its unique ability to rapidly produce complex 3D models. I heard about the Nottingham AM Masters course as an undergraduate student at Loughborough University and was immediately interested because of the university’s reputation and the speciality of the course.

As a taught course, the modules covered a wide range of topics and provide a full coverage of the AM technology, whilst still leaving space for students to research and develop skills in their areas of interest. This meant that I could specialise my Individual Postgraduate Project on the production of Damascus Steel, using Multi-material Metal Additive Manufacturing.

As a university with global connections, the course gave me a great opportunity to work with international students from different backgrounds and cultures. The lecturers at the university create a fun working environment and support you in your work whilst still encouraging you to push yourself. They go above and beyond to make sure that all students are accommodated and supported. With the onset of the pandemic the remaining modules on the course were quickly adapted to accommodate for virtual learning under the government’s guidelines, allowing for a smooth transition into remote learning.

My time at the University of Nottingham provided me with both the skills and confidence to go on to work as an Additive Manufacturing Designer at Sartorius, an international biotechnology company. My role at the company is to support the creation and adoption of Additively Manufactured parts for small batch production, prototyping and eventually mass production."

Course studied: Electrical Engineering for Sustainable and Renewable Energy MSc

I studied an MSc in Electrical Engineering for Sustainable and Renewable Energy from the University of Nottingham. With my qualifications, I am now an Associate Planning Engineer for the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO). I am responsible for evaluating the reliability of New York (NY) bulk electric system and ensuring that NY has sufficient resources to keep the lights on in the future (10-year look-ahead).

As an active member of National Academy of Engineering and Women in Communication Engineering (WICE), I want to encourage and support women to see the opportunities available to them. Before working at NYISO, I was the only female power engineer, so for me it’s really important that women continue to study engineering.

Course studied: Transportation Infrastructure Engineering MSc

I graduated with an MEng in Civil Engineering in Greece and realised my passion for Engineering and Transportation Sector. I applied for the MSc Transportation Infrastructure Engineering at Nottingham and graduated in 2020.

The course not only gave me advanced knowledge and information on different aspects of the transportation sector, but it also introduced me to real multidisciplinary projects, undertaken as assignments.

The university is well known for their reputable tutors who were always glad to assist us even during a challenging pandemic 2020. The course gave me the opportunity to meet people from different companies who would present different topics, something that assisted us to expand our network of contacts.

Now I work as a graduate engineer for a Transportation Infrastructure Design Team for BWB Consulting Limited in Leeds. I am involved in a variety of projects, designing all aspects of a highway, such as highway alignment, drainage design, earthworks and a lot more.
