Biography

Yanming received his BSc in Biotechnology from East China Normal University in 2005, MSc in Biochemical Engineering from Lund University, Faculty of Engineering in 2010, and DSc (Tech) from Aalto University, School of Chemical Engineering in 2019.

Yanming was a research scientist at the industrial biotechnology team of VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland from 2010 to 2015, and a research associate at University of Nottingham's Synthetic Biology Research Centre from 2016 to 2019. Since May 2019, Yanming has been an Assistant Professor at the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering.

Expertise Summary

Trained as a fermentation scientist, Yanming has extensive experience in pharmaceutical and chemical production from renewable resources via microbial fermentation.

Yanming's current research interests include:

  • Reactor design and process control in the field of industrial biotechnology. He is particularly interested in incorporating emerging sensor technologies and innovative control strategies to bio-chemical processes. He is also interested in combining chemical and biological processes to address the challenges of process feasibility and sustainability.
  • Biochemical process modelling and optimisation. Hybrid model of biochemical process that combines mechanistic modelling elements with machine learning can be a powerful tool for design and optimisation of industrial bioprocesses.
  • Data mining and automation for early-stage bioprocess development.
