Biography

Dr Porter is a member of the Architecture, Culture & Tectonics Research Group.

Expertise Summary

Dr Porter's interests, qualifications and experience span a range of built environment disciplines including landscape architecture, urban design and architecture.

Following training at the University of Melbourne (PhD, M.Arch, Grad Cert L.Arch, BPD) Nicole taught landscape theory within the landscape program at Melbourne. In 2008 Nicole was appointed as lecturer in Landscape Architecture at the University of Canberra, where she taught a number of design studios, with projects ranging from individual residential gardens through to urban interventions / installations, critical urban design scenarios and the design and management of National Park landscapes. Her current role at the University of Nottingham includes architecture studio teaching and research with a strong landscape and place making focus.

Nicole has practiced as an urban designer with the Australian Capital Territory, Canberra, where she engaged in master planning work and strategic policy research. Nicole led the production of the PIA award winning Molonglo Valley Place making guide (2010). She is an academic member of the Landscape Institute, UK.

Teaching Summary

I am the founding module convenor for the theory module K13 LAD 'Landscape Design: meaning and making'.

I lead Masters architecture thesis studio units with an emphasis on landscape-led design speculations.

I provide landscape architecture, urban design and architectural theory input to several modules and projects, including the 2014 masters studio based on a site at Bashan reservoir, Shandong Province, China, and local Beeston Town Centre regeneration live projects. I contribute teaching within the theory module K11 PBL 'People Buildings Landscape' as well as delivering guest lectures in Masters and other undergraduate programmes.

Current Research

The content of my research is global in its scope: First, the relationship between place branding, landscape identity and design that I continue to investigate is a ubiquitous market-driven global phenomenon (with wide reaching consequences); Second, my focus on the design and management of national park landscapes ranges from international conservation designations and nation-wide park systems through to the site-specific policies and design responses for individual places.

I am also interested in the relationships between mindfulness and place. This encompasses several themes, including: the relationship between mindfulness based interventions (MBIs) and the physical settings in which they are practiced; links between mindfulness and creativity and mental health for design practitioners; Buddhist landscape and architecture and its relationship to mindfulness training and practice; human-nature relations and ethics as manifest through mindful awareness.

My monograph 'Landscape and Branding: the promotion and production of place' was published by Routledge in 2016.

Past Research

I have presented research at conferences in seventeen countries, and my work is published internationally.

I completed my PhD thesis in 2009, titled The promotion and production of contemporary landscape: place branding, media and landscape architectural design projects for the Blue Mountains, Australia 1995 - 2009. This research explores the professional conceptualisation, representation and design of landscape within contemporary culture. A case study of the cultural construction of the Blue Mountains (Australia) examines the practices of creative industries including landscape architecture, print media and electronic media, focusing on whether these perpetuate or challenge the systematic promotion of landscape practiced through 'place branding'. By addressing how landscape ideas are communicated in various media, this research contextualizes landscape architecture within the current domain of cultural practice and discourse.

This thesis was developed and published as 'Landscape and Branding: the promotion and production of place' Routledge, 2016.

Past PhD projects supervised to completion include:

  • Dr Mohamed Fagier, Urban regeneration and the Liverpool Waterfront
  • Dr Wasana de Silva, Performing Place : Natural Landscape, Cultural Place, Performance of Sri Lankan traditional Settlement
