Upendo Teachers visit UK 2011

In March 2011, two teachers from Upendo Junior School, Catherine Makonge (the Head Teacher) and Stella Muteshi, came to the UK on a British Council sponsored exchange visit. They were based at the Wadsworth Fields Primary School and also came to visit us in the School of English at the University of Nottingham. Catherine and Stella took part in a Q&A session along with Caroline Adams and Fiona Stockdale, two English undergraduates who had visited Upendo in 2010.

World Book Day meant free novels for everyone!

The visit coincided with World Book Day and as part of this global initiative Emma Price, a first year student in the School of English, was contacted by Amazon.co.uk to distribute free copies of her chosen novel to members of the School and its visitors. Emma chose the novel One Day by David Nicholls and it was distributed to staff, students and the Upendo visitors to encourage the development of literacy both in Nottingham and in Africa.
