Overview
In this one-day symposium, we will explore and discuss the use of literature in language teaching and learning. We are looking for twelve presentations which will approach the topic from within the broad fields of ELT, applied linguistics, pedagogical stylistics, and literary scholarship. We are particularly interested in approaches that emphasise the language of literature and engage explicitly with a text (or texts) in their application and discussion.
.Example topics include but are not limited to the following issues:
• the challenges and benefits in the use of literary texts in ELT
• the politics, ideologies, and cultural identities at stake in EFLit
• whether the use of literary texts in the language classroom requires different pedagogies
• how literary engagement in the language classroom can be assessed
• language teachers’ attitudes towards the use of literature in the language classroom
• the challenges of a lang/lit integration at different levels of proficiency
• the role of adaptations, dramatisations, multimodal literature in the language classroom
• the relationship between literature and language learners’ motivation and emotions
• the integration of culture and intercultural communication in language teaching
The event will be held at the University of Nottingham, in a fully integrated hybrid format comprising both on-campus and online speakers and participants. Refreshments and lunch will be provided on-campus. The day is scheduled for March, 30th 9:00 - 18:00 UK time (BST).
