Expertise Summary

Before joining The University of Nottingham Ningbo China (September 2015), I lived and worked in Bordeaux, France for almost 14 years. I have taught Linguistics, Applied Linguistics and English as a Second Language at the Université Bordeaux Montagne. With the Université de Bordeaux, I have taught English for Healthcare Professionals in areas ranging from nursing, radiology and podiatry. With extensive experience teaching ESL in Adult Continuing Education, I have also worked with young learners with cognitive and behavioural challenges. I have experience in translation and have translated the play Eternity by playwright Jesus Carazo from French to English.

Although previously working primarily in French Linguistics and Comparative Linguistics, my recent areas of specialization are in English Linguistics and English Applied Linguistics. My interests and/or expertise include Semantics, Pragmatics, Advanced English Grammar, Medical English, Motivation and L2 Acquisition, Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) as well as Discourse Analysis, Enunciative Linguistics and linguistic Agency/Agentivity.

Research Summary

Agency and Agentivity

The underlying theme of my research is linguistic agency / agentivity. Actions fall under descriptions and languages enable different means for describing actions and their participants. While control and intentionality are essential elements of agency / agentivity, the subject-speaker (the utterer) plays a central role in the attribution of action. It is therefore necessary to shed light on how speakers use different modes of description in the assignment of actions (including praise or blame) and how subjectivity and "cultural subjectivities" of action are mobilized in discourse.
