Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014

The School of English is delighted to have retained its place in the top 10 universities for research into English.

Its ranking of 9th by 'research power' is particularly pleasing, as it recognizes the strength and depth of research excellence that exists right across the School, and over an exceptionally diverse range of subjects.

This means that any student studying at Nottingham can be confident that they will be engaging with staff who are producing internationally excellent and often world-leading research.

The Research Excellence Framework (REF) is the UK's definitive guide to research quality and excellence, ranking all universities on research strength and rating the academic disciplines on the basis of their international standing.  The REF is a periodic exercise assessing academic research from all UK universities, with separate scores (from 4* to 1*) assigned for publications, research impact and environment.

The 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) evaluated 98% of the School of English's research publications as worthy of international recognition in terms of originality, significance and rigour. 48% was world-leading.
