This course provides an intermediate level induction in modern multi-level modelling for social science research. These procedures have become increasingly accessible over the past few decades because of the general increase in available computing power and relevant software.

The need for multi-level modelling exists in all the social sciences and is not restricted to a single discipline; it is particularly relevant in all situations where observations are clustered, or where they are structured in terms on context (historical, geographical, administrative etc..). Multi-level modelling is therefore essential when dealing with comparative data, panel data and clustered observations (as is often the case in educational studies). It is safe to say that awareness of when multi-level modelling is (or is not) required has also greatly increased, so that ignoring it (when needed) in one's own analyses will almost certainly result in rejection by examiners, reviewers and editors.

This course not only introduces these methods, it also critically evaluates them in relation to other analytical options, and the course provides, in addition to substantive and methodological instruction, practical training in conducting these kinds of analysis.

Please note, this is an interdisciplinary module that is open to students from across the social sciences. If you have any doubts about whether the course is suitable for your needs or level of study, please contact the module convenor before registering.
