From Potosí, Bolivia, in August 1798 she sought permission to work at Guaillaguasi Mill and to become a member of its guild. This was refused by the male-dominated guild as men "disputed with their reason" whereas women "disputed with their tongues". She objected to their attitude of "el otro sexo inhábil" as "weak, ridiculous and unsubstantial". She spoke fluent Quechua and Aymara. (Buechler, 271, 371)
